KABABAYAN AT UC IRVINE PRESENTS ITS 23RD ANNUAL PCN, "IN THIS CORNER"

Watch as an intricate story about Pilipino American life unfolds around the Pilipino Boxing Era in the wild streets of 1930's and 40's Chicago. In a world teased with cruel promise, sharp tongues, and closed doors, and in a community locked behind a history of lies, swept underneath baskets of picked fruit, and buried underneath dirty laundry, Pilipinos could find comfort in one of their few cultural icons- Pilipino Boxing champions. Ripped with Bolo punches, moving like swift kali hits, and adorned with championships, these prized fighters played as one of the few community heroes of the time.

This is the era that paints the backdrop of Aurora Guinto. An immigrant woman meeting her brother, Enrique, in Chicago. Torn by two worlds, held between two loyalties, and alive with one heart, Aurora finds her new life in Chicago defined by the hate, bias, and contradictions of the times and era. Like her fighting brothers she fights to defend the only thing she fights to keep- love.
